What is Substitute?
• Substitute 1.5.2 is a file utility.
Substitute 1.5.2 is able to copy, move, rename, delete files, it can also lock/unlock
files and is able to make full aliases.
Be careful: If you want to move and rename a locked file, Substitute 1.5.2 moves it but
leaving the original name. If you want to move and rename a locked file and, in the new
location, a file with old name already exists, Substitute 1.5.2 leaves everything
untouched: you were clearly kidding!
• Substitute 1.5.2 is an info utility.
Substitute 1.5.2 gathers information about files (name, size, creation and
modification date/hour, lock state) and changes their attributes (type, creator, various flags, etc...). Substitute 1.5.2 allows to copy some type or some creator (or both) belonging to another file.
All these abilities are located in the menu "Special" and in the window
"Main Window".
• Substitute 1.5.2 is a Drag&Drop utility.
Substitute 1.5.2 supports Drag&Drop of multiple files: after dragging, a window
will appear returning the dragged files number, the current file and the
available operation. When only one file remains (or if only one file has been
dragged), after its performance Substitute 1.5.2 quits. If Substitute 1.5.2 is
already open you go in the Main Window.
Remember: Substitute 1.5.2 works only with files, not with folders or disks.
Moreover, if you try to open an Alias Substitute 1.5.2 will open the
original.

• Substitute 1.5.2 is a format utility.
Substitute 1.5.2 is able to format and to verify 400, 800 & 1440K diskettes with a "verification only" option available. Substitute 1.5.2 allows even the catalog only deletion, with 400k, 800k & 1440k verification and initialization option.
Be careful: if you want to format/initialize a 1440k diskette, whit 400k option
checked, the result will be a 1440k diskette. If you want to format/initialize a
1440k diskette, whit 800k option checked, the result will be error -50.
When the window "Substitute Format" is called and if a diskette is already
inserted, it is unmounted. If you want to eject already inserted diskette press
the "Eject" button. Every operation is performed on the disk drive selected by the proper radio button (external or internal).
The "Exit" button allows to close the window "Substitute Format".

• Substitute 1.5.2 is a Finder replacement for emergency diskette.
With the release of System 7 the capability to fit more applications in
an emergency diskette disappeared: the free space left by System and Finder is
indeed too small. Substitute 1.5.2 can efficently replace the Finder (remember
to change Substitute's name to "Finder"...). From the menu "File", you can
launch all the applications and the Desk Accessories you want. From the
"Substitute" menu, by selecting "Add Application..." or "Add Desk Accessory..."
you can add up to ten Applications and/or Desk Accesories, and launch them from
the menus "Applications" & "Desk Accessories".
Well, many people have written to me they have problems in booting their
Macintosh with Substitute...A little clarification: the System launches any
application named Finder, without any check. The same applies to Substitute. If
you put System & Substitute 1.5.2 in the System Folder you can't reboot, because
Substitute 1.5.2 is not a real Finder, it is only a substitute!!! So for
rebooting you must place, on the emercency diskette, only System & Substitute 1.5.2
(and the likely System Enabler) without System Folder (that is: at the root
level).
(Oh...well, to make a short story long, I should also remind you about this:
it is possible, after changing Substitute's name to "Finder", to set type and
creator to 'FNDR' and 'MACS'. In this case System & Substitute 1.5.2 must be
placed in the System Folder and it will be possible to exploit the potentiality
of extensions and controls. A caveat: it will not open controls.
Many people have requested a Shutdown/Restart procedure for Substitute 1.5, I have
inserted in Substitute 1.5.2 a simple and small Shutdown/Restart option, available
inside menu "System".

Substitute 1.5.2 requires at least System 7 to run!
Substitute 1.5.2 has been tested on my Macintoshes: Powerbook 145, LCIII,
Classic. Also it has been tested on Macintosh Quadra 700, LC(Quadra)630, Duo 210,
Duo 280c, IIci. The testing has been performed with System 7.0, 7.1, 7.1.2, 7.5 & 7.5.1.
Substitute 1.5.2 would like to have many more options, such as the HD
formatting or scanning and mounting SCSI peripherals. This options will maybe be
present in future releases, but you do not rely on this: Substitute 1.5.2 must
stay small, small...
